Rock Shelter(s) by the Wissahickon

There are a few, really amazing rock shelters and shelter-like formations along the Wissahickon.
The upthrust of a long ago weathered-away mountain chain has left us with some inspiring crags, folds and overhangs made of the local gutrock.

As far as I know, there has been no serious archaeology done here, in spite of the fact that local lingo has given these shelters names like "Indian Cave", "Council Rock" and such like...

I'm very intrigued by the caves the first immigrants used when they first came to Philadelphia. I couldn't find any references to how they were built or stories about them. Have you seen or heard anything about them?

Well I know that the Kelpius Community in what is now Germantown/East Falls/Roxborough carved a series of "caves" out of the Wissahickon Valley walls. It is alleged that at least one of these caves is still extant, in the woords off Hermit's Lane. Some claim that the cave in question is an old springhouse (which it does resemble), but that is disputed.

On further perusal of your own blog, I note that you are already quite familiar with Brother Kelpius.:)

Apologies for my own attempt at pedantry.
